Basic skills

Cast-on

Bind-off

  • Bind off in pattern
  • Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretchy Bind Off: I use it most often in sock cuff
  • Tubular Bind off
  • Italian bind-off for 1x1 rib
  • Italian bind-off for 2x2 rib
  • Chinese Waitress Bind-Off/Double Chain Bind-Off
  • Crocheted Bind-Off
  • Jeny’s Interlock Bind-off
  • Elizabeth Zimmermann’s Sewn Bind-Off
  • Icelandic Bind-Off: my favourite
  • I-Cord Bind-Off
  • Kitchener Stitch
  • Lori’s Twisty Bind Off
  • Picot Bind-Off
  • Three Needle Bind-Off: often use in seams when joining shoulders in sweater
  • Two Color Decorative Bind-Off
  • Russian Bind-Off/Elastic Bind-Off
  • Suspended Bind-Off

Increase

  • M1. How I remember the direction between M1L/M1R:
    • M1L: the yarn looks left leaning when putting the bar to the left needle; then knit through the back loop
    • M1R: the yarn looks right leaning when putting the bar to the left needle; then knit through the front loop

KFB and SKL

  • Knit front back(kfb) Left leaning. Often used decoratively or at the end of rows because it’s more visible
  • Slip knit lift (SKL) Right leaning. Slip one knitwise, slip it back to the left needle, then knit the stitch. Lift the loop one row below, and knit through the backloop

How to read Japanese pattern

https://www.tezukuritown.com/doc/nihonvogue_ravelry/dl_Japanesecharts.pdf Japanese pattern tutorials – dancingbarefoot

This is how Japanese knitting patterns are written. They’re very minimal and rely (almost) solely on schematics. Here are a few resources to get you started. https://ktslowcloset.com/2015/09/28/cowichan-via-japan-how-to-read-a-japanese-knitting-pattern/ https://clearwaterknits.com/japanese-pattern-charts/ http://tata-tatao.to/knit/graphchart/e-index.html https://knitty.com/ISSUEss14/FEATss14EK.php
